Warnings About Credit Card Skimming
As technology advances, so too do criminals in order to capitalize on it.
This is the case with credit card skimmers, electronic devices that allow criminals to obtain your banking information. In most cases, you will never even notice the skimmer, but it will be able to obtain your bank account number and PIN code. With this information, criminals can raid your bank accounts and withdraw all of your funds. A 31-year-old man was arrested in Phoenix last week for using a skimmer to steal money from unwitting suspects.
According to police reports, he re-encoded a gift card to purchase $800 worth of cigarettes, which he then sold at the smoke shop that he owns. When officers obtained a search warrant for his home, they found that he had other similar gift cards, along with $31,000 in cash. He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated identity theft and other theft crime charges.
