Failure to Register Leads to Arrest

After failing to register in two states as a sex offender, one man found himself in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents.

The 34-year-old man, whose identity is being withheld, attempted to reenter the country via the Douglas Port pedestrian processing area. However, when officers ran a background check, they discovered that he had been convicted of multiple sex crimes for which he had failed to register. Back in November 2002 the man was convicted of raping a child in Seattle. Afterward, when he did not add his name to local sex-offender registries, he was slapped with several warrants for Escape of Community Custody and Failure to Register as a Sex Offender.

The man is now in the custody of the Douglas Police Department until he can be extradited. This arrest happened in part thanks to the Department of Homeland Security"s program, 'Southwest Border Initiative,' that was launched in 2009.
